The Dregs

The Dregs

The other day Joe Biden called Trump supporters, “the dregs of society.” Now, I don’t know why Biden would channel Hillary Clinton, it certainly didn’t work for her, but liberals just can’t help themselves.

I’ve had the honor of meeting quite a number of Trump supporters over the last two years, and it’s nearly unimaginable to me that even Democrats would call these people “dregs”. Let me introduce you to the Trump supporters I know.

Trump’s supporters are hard working, many are retired. The overwhelming number of Trump supporters don’t have criminals records other than a speeding ticket. And though we’re not wild about it, most of us pay the amount due on our taxes each year.

We donate to a whole group of causes:  political, charitable and religious. We contribute to groups that promote freedom and opportunity; provide for the powerless and suffering; care for the hungry, the sick and the hurting — people and animals — here in the U.S. and around the world.

We volunteer at hospitals, schools, youth groups, churches, synagogues, and pregnancy crisis centers. We tutor the disadvantaged. We give rides to the elderly and disabled. We provide foster care for at-risk kids. We travel thousands of miles to help those hurt by natural disasters to rebuild.

We vote.

We stand, and put our hand over our hearts when we hear our National Anthem. And we mostly don’t support or patronize those companies, institutions, politicians, and sports teams who insult us for doing so.

We think immigration and immigrants are important to America and that EACH immigrant should be legal, fully vetted and prove that he or she wants to become part of the core of America.

We are passionate about America and the issues it confronts, but we don’t beat up innocent protestors, we don’t hide behind masks, we don’t destroy private or public property, we don’t block traffic, and we don’t scream at the sky for no apparent reason.

Most of us believe in individual freedom, liberty, and that the product of your  hard work, innovation, and ingenuity belongs to you, not to the government or to those who would take unfair advantage.

That’s why we believe in the constitution and the bill of rights as the best means yet devised to protect people from government abuse. We believe in freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and free market capitalism. And we believe the government exists to serve the people, not the other way around.

Knowing my fellow Trump supporters as I do, it baffles the mind that the former Vice President would call 63,000,000 Americans “the dregs of society”. Of course, he’s free to say what he likes. Freedom of speech is one of those freedoms we believe is so important. But just as was the case with Hillary calling us “deplorables,” calling Trump supporters “the dregs of society” says a lot more about Joe Biden than it does about us.

I don’t understand why Biden would duplicate Hillary’s approach of insulting the supporters of their opponent, but I can only guess it will meet with the same ultimate failure.
